Top Selling Cologne for Men in 2017

Want to know what's selling well in the world of men's colognes?

Here are the best selling colognes on Amazon. While it's an interesting list in and of itself, knowing what colognes are selling best also helps you see general trends in the market: which colognes are emerging, which are perpetually best-sellers, and which fragrances are starting to slip in popularity.

Like with anything, there are many advantages and a few  disadvantages to buying the colognes on the list. I wrote them up in the following two lists:

Pros

1. Great for Gift Giving

These best selling fragrances are great to give as gifts since they are typically crowd pleasers that most men will enjoy. These are all fragrances that almost anyone would welcome — probably your biggest issue is whether they have it already.

2. Safe for Blind-Buys

It's also sometimes scary to buy cologne blind on the internet but intimidating and time consuming to go in-store and sample colognes. I feel like these are all classics that are going to be safe buys. In addition, I've tried to briefly describe them below to further remove the risk.

3. High Quality

One of the most frustrating things about being a frag head is hearing great buzz about a fragrance, only to find out later when you buy a bottle, it was all hype. Many of fragrances have stood the test of time and none of them would have made it to the best-seller list if they weren't good, high-quality fragrances in the first place.

Cons

1. You Might Smell Like Everyone Else

Smelling like someone else might not seem like a big deal... until you're out on a date and get told you smell like their dad, ex-boyfriend, brother, etc. Sometimes it's worth branching out from the standards and updating your cologne collection

2. End Up in a Scent Rut

It seems like American guys just can't get enough of that "fresh out of the shower" smell and many on this list reflect a preference for it. Not that there's anything wrong with it per se, but there's a whole world of scent beyond that.

3. Not Supporting Niche Perfume Makers

If all you ever do are buy the big best sellers, you'll miss out on some wonderful niche perfumes. I love some of the more niche and experimental fragrance-makers that explore scents beyond what's on the best-seller list. Plus, it's just nice to support the little guys sometimes.

Cologne Trends for Men

Based on this list, we can start to get a sense of where men's fragrance is in 2017. There are several noteworthy trends I'd like to explore in more detail. Please note, this is just based on my observations. I will try to research more on overall industry trends and see if my observations hold water.

1. Aquatic Aromatics are Well Represented on the Best-Seller List

The first trend I noticed is how many of the popular fragrances fall into the aquatics family. From the classics like Cool Water and Gio to designer adaptations like Light Blue from Dolce & Gabbana or Polo Blue from Ralph Lauren, almost half the featured colognes are aquatics.

These colognes are designed to replicate the smells of the seaside, from salty air to sea to marine plants. Aquatic aromatics  are relatively modern. Many credit Cool Water with being the first aquatic when it launched in 1988. However they have already proved extremely popular, as you can see from this list.

2. Classic Colognes Die Hard

With all the fragrances launches and emerging niche players,  I tend to think of  the cologne landscape as a constantly changing. However I was surprised how many of these best sellers are classics.  I know many of them, including Cool Water have been reformulated over the years but I was still pleasantly surprised to see so many classic scents are still not only holding on, but selling well.

3. Moss, Musk and Amber

I haven't had a chance to personally review all these yet (I'm working on it!). But as I was compiling the list of notes, I noticed moss, amber and musk came up again and again and seem to be very popular notes.

So without further ado, here's the top selling cologne countdown. I haven't had a chance to do full reviews of all these so I've included some good YouTuber views as well.:

14. Polo Blue by Ralph Lauren for Men, Eau De Toilette Natural Spray

$$ — 4.2 Oz / 125 Ml

A warm, inviting aquatic launched in 2002 by perfumers Christophe Laudamiel and Carlos Benaim. Top notes of melon, cucumber and tangerine mix with heart notes of basil, clary sage and geranium before drying down to moss, musk and amber basenotes.

I'd say it's more of an evening or special occasion cologne. Like all Ralph Lauren fragrances, it's effortlessly classy and sophisticated.

    13. Tommy Hilfiger for Men EDT

    $$ — 3.4 Oz / 100 Ml

    This is a sweet, easy-going fragrance that's popular with young men. It's very affordable and as we said in our full review, a truly American cologne in concept.

    Launched in 1994 for Tommy Hilfiger, this fragrance is still going strong. The scents are supposed to represent a journey across America: Nevada's lavender and bergamot, Florida's grapefruit, North Carolina driftwood, and cactus flowers from Arizona.

      12. Dolce and Gabbana The One EDT for Men

      $$ — 3.4 Oz / 100 Ml

      An oriental, spicy perfume designed for sensual warmth. Also a great bottle presentation.

        11. Yacht Man Blue By Puig Eau-de-toilette Spray

        $ — 3.4 Oz / 100 Ml

        Extremely affordable, refreshing clean scent designed for casual, daytime wear.

          10. D & G Light Blue By Dolce & Gabbana For Men Eau De Toilette Spray

          $$ — 4.2 Oz / 125 Ml

          A great warm weather aquatic fragrance. Launched in 2007 by perfumer Alberto Morillas. The sweet citrus opening leads to a spicy heart of rosemary, pepper and rosewood before going into basenotes of moss, musk and incense.

          Intended for romantic wear — good addition to your collection for date nights and special occasions.

            9. Nautica Voyage by Nautica for Men

            $ — 3.4 Oz / 100 Ml

            Launched in 2006 by perfumer Maurice Roucel, this is another proud aquatic scent perfect for summer with dewy moss and woody amber.

            A great everyday choice for men who need an understated fragrance. Good for the office or casual use.

              8. Versace Eros Eau de Toilette Spray for Men

              $$ — 3.4 Oz / 100 Ml

              There's just something sexy about Versace colognes. This fragrance interprets masculinity through a luminous aura with an intense, vibrant and glowing freshness. A light scent best for spring and summer, it is a subtle fragrance for men wanting to be  polished but unobtrusive.

              Top notes include mint leaves, lemon zest and green apple. The heart notes are marked by Tonka Beans, Amber, Geranium Flower and Vanilla. The base notes are a woody cedar and moss.

                7. Drakkar Noir By Guy Laroche For Men

                $ — 6.7 Oz / 200 Ml

                This cologne is an old-school masculine, sexy fragrance from 1982! Drakkar is the Viking word for dragon boat and it lives up to it's name with its unrepentant manliness. This is not a fragrance for the meek!

                Top notes include a fresh herbal approach with lemon followed by heart notes of angelica, wormwood and juniper. The basenotes include pine, moss and cedar.

                  6. Nautica Voyage N-83 Eau de Toilette Spray

                  $ — 3.4 Oz / 100 Ml

                  An updated Nautica Voyage special for evening wear. Don't expect Voyage with a few notes changed, this is a muskier, heavier scent.

                    5. Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio Men EDT

                    $$ — 3.4 Oz / 100 Ml

                    A perpetual best-seller, the main complaint I have about this cologne is that EVERYONE seems to have it. I wrote a full review here.

                    The fragrance is a crowd-pleaser of fresh aquatics. Top notes include jasmine, rosemary and hespiradic notes. In the heart is persimmon fruit and that dries into a ceder, patchouli and musk.

                      4. Paco Rabanne 1 Million Eau de Toilette Spray for Men

                      $ — 3.4 Oz / 100 Ml

                      A great scent for young men — this cologne always gets high marks for sexiness. This scent was launched in 2008 and the fragrance was created by perfumers Michel Girard, Olivier Pescheux and Christophe Raynaud.

                      A fruity, flowery fragrance that is notoriously popular with the ladies

                        3. Versace Man Eau Fraiche By Gianni Versace For Men Edt Spray

                        $ — 3.4 Oz / 100 Ml

                        A sweet, fun fragrance with a range of scents from the Mediterranean such as lemon, tarragon, cedar and sage.

                          2. Cool Water By Davidoff For Men. Eau De Toilette Spray

                          $ — 4.2 Oz / 125 Ml

                          The best selling mens cologne in the world was introduced in 1988 and is still going strong. An aquatic fragrance that creates that fresh, clean “just showered” smell. It's been reformulated over the years to be more in line with modern tastes.

                          My main complaint is that it's too popular — everyone from grandpa to teenagers wears this. However a good value and an easy, everyday cologne choice.

                            1. Chrome Legend by Azzaro For Men. Eau De Toilette Spray

                            $ — 4.2 Oz / 125 Ml

                            The best selling cologne for men was launched by Azzaro in 2007. CHROME LEGEND is a men's fragrance that has top notes of apple, tea and bitter orange that meld into heart notes of moss, musk and sea spray. The base notes are cedar, tonka, vetiver and amber.

                            It is subtle and safe but still rakes in the compliments. Considering cheap price, this crowd-pleasing cologne definitely worth a blind buy.

                              Conclusion

                              It's interesting to see how many classic fragrances are still topping the best-seller list. My mouth dropped when I saw Drakkar Noir is still going strong. There's a strong tendency towards the blue, aquatic scents with a few stronger colognes thrown in.

                              The great thing about best-sellers is if you're new to fragrance buying or want to get a gift, you know you're safe with any one of these  popular fragrances.
